I try to keep things on BigPlansBigCrash pretty light and fun, but every now and then I need to vent. Today we focus on Bill O’Reilly. Let me just add that I don’t enjoy writing about people I don’t like because it gives them more press (even if it is only 20 readers) that they really don’t deserve. Ok, here we go.
This weekend I was reading the usual suspects. On CanYouSayYesPlease I saw a video of Bill O’Reilly interviewing Jon Stewart (video can be seen at the bottom of this entry). I should have known that watching it would only piss me off. I didn’t know much about O’Reilly before watching the clips other than it’s a pain in the ass to type his last name…Freaking ” ‘ ” key.
After sitting through a few clips I couldn’t understand how a person can be so narrowminded. I understand that some people have strong opinions, but this man refuses to accept ANYTHING outside of what he already believes. Debating with him almost seems pointless as he will argue the most absurd point to the grave as long as he truely believes it.
Sure, I don’t agree with most of his uber-conservative views, but that’s not what makes him a douchebag. He can believe whatever he wants, but when you refuse to accept that fact that other people have different beliefs, well F-that. Needless to say, I will never watch one of his shows.
Maybe that’s why I don’t like debate type shows. Who cares what other people think. Believe what you want and move on, no sense in wasting life on arguing why or why not you agree with someone else. The fact that people watch debates on a daily basis boggles my mind. I’d rather watch the Phillies throw away another season while Harry Kalas slowly loses his mind to old age.

But really I agree, I see no evidence that he is capable of on-the-fly critical reasoning. An interview is worthless if it’s only purpose is to serve as a forum for ridicule and an opportunity to express your own beliefs without even attempting to incorporate the views of the person sitting across from you. It’s extremely intolerant and not amenable to compromise.
