There is a very well respected and well known theory that backs up your observation that “it seems like if we improve their conditions they’ll just have more children”. It’s called the Demographic Transition theory. The birth rate will go down but their culture has to reflect the changing values that accompany modern day capitalism. This can take time.
The nations that comprise the G8 should absolve Africa’s debt but that should be it. Direct investment (the wealthy countries loaning/giving money to the developing world) is not the answer. It hasn’t worked so far so why would we increase the aid? Makes no sense. Foreign direct investment (companies investing in the individual economies of each country) is the only thing that can work. This does not mean exploitation. Countries should always select what companies will be involved responsibly. Companies should also be subject to supervision by supranational agencies.
Sorry for the essay but I’m guessing some hippee told you to take down your entry cuz they thought it was “callous”. Tell them it’s callous not to have any idea what they are talking about.
